Clay Shirky

 

Clay is a provocative, insightful voice on all things Internet: economics and culture, media and community, and the open source movement. He divides his time between consulting, teaching, and writing on the social and economic effects of Internet technologies. His consulting practice is focused on the way network technologies provide new ways for groups to get things done, including collaboration tools, social networks, peer-to-peer sharing, collaborative filtering, and Open Source development.  In addition to his consulting work, Clay is an adjunct professor in NYU’s graduate Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP), where he teaches courses on the interrelated effects of social and technological network topology—how our networks shape culture and vice-versa. Prior to his appointment at NYU, Clay was a partner at The Accelerator Group, an investment firm focused on early-stage companies.

 

Formerly, he was the chief technology officer of the NYC-based Web media and design firm Site Specific, where he created the company’s media tracking database and server log analysis software. Site Specific was later acquired by CKS Group, where Clay was promoted to VP Technology, Eastern Region.  Clay has written extensively about the Internet since 1996. His recent book, Here Comes Everybody, explores the effects of open networks, collaboration and user created and disseminated content on organizations and industries. Chris Carpita

 

Chris is a senior engineer at Snooth. Having long-term experience with Perl, PHP, database management, and systems administration, Chris applies his comprehensive skills to a wide variety of technical challenges. He designs the inner-workings of most of the features on Snooth and frequently jumps tracks into data management and maintenance of systems. Before coming to Snooth, Chris was a bioinformatics programmer and analyst at Cornell University, where he conducted evolutionary research and designed web applications for colleagues.  An avid reader of books, blogs, and anything else with the printed word, Chris also enjoys cooking in his spare time and has become an even greater lover of wine since joining Snooth.

 

 Ashim Chhabra

 

Ashim Chhabra has held a variety of roles including Software Developer, Operations, and Business Manager. He is a Sr. Product Manager for Yahoo! Search and over the last couple years has managed all things related to the Yahoo! Search BOSS API. Previous to that he managed the global rollout of the Yahoo! Mobile oneSearch™ product line. He was born in India, raised in Ohio, and has B.S. and M.S. Computer Science degrees from the Ohio State University and the University of Florida, respectively. 

 

Tom Coates

 

Tom's focused on new product development around social software, future media and the web of data. He's worked for many prominent companies including Time Out, UpMyStreet and the BBC. For the last few years he's worked on developing new projects for Yahoo! including the Fire Eagle location-sharing service. He speaks regularly at conferences and is currently particularly excited by real-time technologies, personal informatics and life instrumentation.

 

Greg Cohn

 

Greg Cohn is Director of Strategy and Business Development for YOS, helping open the Yahoo! platform to 3rd-party developers, publishers, and advertisers. He is also active in cultivating the startup community and has been involved in several acquisitions, as well as Yahoo!’s partnership with MySpace and Google to form the OpenSocial Foundation. Previously, Greg helped successfully launch the Yahoo! Publisher Network and held executive roles at Away.com, Waterfront Media, and NewWest.Net. His early career was in the book industry, where he edited both fiction and nonfiction books for St. Martin’s Press. Greg hails originally from New York City. 

 

Douglas Crockford

 

Douglas Crockford is a product of our public education system. A registered voter, he owns his own car. He has developed office automation systems. He did research in games and music at Atari. He was Director of Technology at Lucasfilm. He was Director of New Media at Paramount. He was the founder and CEO of Electric Communities/Communities.com. He was founder and CTO of State Software, where he discovered JSON. He is now an architect at Yahoo! and the world's foremost living authority on JavaScript.

 

Carrie Cronkey

 

Carrie is the Director of BD and Strategic Partnerships for Mint.com, the leading online personal finance website.  She is responsible for all strategic partnership discussions with leading media, internet, and finance companies.  She also developed the web and mobile platform distribution plan for Mint data, content, and services.  Prior to working at Mint, Carrie was employed by Yahoo! in various roles.  Most recently, she led business development for Yahoo! Real Estate.  She also worked in the Yahoo! Corporate Development group, where she focused on corporate strategy for the consumer business.  Carrie has also worked in Finance for Warner Music Group, and in Investment Banking at Credit Suisse First Boston.  Carrie has a MBA from Columbia Business School and a BA in Economics from Duke University.

 

Dennis Crowley

 

Dennis Crowley is the co-founder of foursquare, a service that mixes social, locative and gaming elements to encourage people to explore the cities in which they live. Previously, Dennis founded dodgeball.com, one of the first mobile social services in the US, which was acquired by Google in 2005.  He has been named one of the "Top 35 Innovators Under 35" by MIT's Technology Review magazine (2005) and has won the "Fast Money" bonus round on the TV game show Family Feud (2009). His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Wired, Time Magazine, Newsweek, MTV, Slashdot and NBC. He is currently an Adjunct Professor at NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP).  Dennis holds a Master's degree from New York University's Interactive Telecommunications Program and a Bachelor's degree from the Newhouse School at Syracuse University. 

 

Anil Dash

 

Anil Dash is a pioneering blogger whose site at Dashes.com was founded in 1999 as one of the earliest and most influential blogs on the Internet. Dash also played a formative role as Chief Evangelist at Six Apart Ltd, helping start one of the world's leading blogging companies. Prior to joining Six Apart as its first employee in 2003, Dash worked in online communications and technology development for the publishing and music industries. Dash lives in New York City with his wife Alaina Browne, a noted pioneer in the world of online food media. His personal blog can still be found at dashes.com.

 

Brian Ellin

 

Brian is the product manager for JanRain's RPX, a service for connecting your site to authentication, profile, contact, and social activity APIs from Yahoo!, Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace.  He is the original author of the Ruby OpenID library, is an open source advocate, and is passionate about making the authenticated web secure and easy to use.  Brian lives in Portland, Oregon.

   

Paul Ford

 

Paul Ford is Associate Editor, Harper's Magazine, where he edits for the web as well as for print. He brought Harper's 159-year, 250,000-page archive to the web in 2007; the system now supports tens of thousands of registered subscribers. He has written for NPR, TheMorningNews.org, XML.com, and the National Information Standards Organization's Information Standards Quarterly, and is the author of the novel Gary Benchley, Rock Star (Penguin/Plume). Paul programs in PHP, Java, XSLT2.0, and lately Python, especially Django. He will teach Content Strategy at the School of Visual Arts in New York City starting in 2010. His personal website, started in 1997, is Ftrain.com. He lives in Brooklyn, New York with his wife Mo and the obligatory cats. 

 

Gary Gale

 

Gary is the Director of Engineering in the UK for the Geo Technologies group at Yahoo! The Geo Technologies group provides the tools and technologies that drive user location, geocoding, location identification and disambiguation within Yahoo!, both internally and via public services such as GeoPlanet, Placemaker, Fire Eagle and Flickr.  Prior to taking up my role at Yahoo!, I've worked within the geo domain for companies such as Digicon, developing geophysical technologies to aid in the search for natural resources and the European Space Agency Research Institute in Rome, Italy, participating in the development and launch of ERS-1, Europe's first remote sensing satellite. Outside of the geo field, I've worked for companies including the BBC World Service, Reuters, Factiva.com and Network Associates. 

 

John Geraci

 

 John Geraci has spent the last six years making life in cities better with the use of web technologies. His latest project, DIYcity.org, has web developers and urban planners all over the world teaming up to create open source tools for residents of cities everywhere. Prior to DIYcity Geraci co-founded the hyperlocal news network Outside.in. His earlier work, which includes web-meets-real-world projects Neighbornode, Foundcity and Grafedia, has been featured in the New York Times, Wired, Popular Science and other news sources. Derek Gottfrid

 

Derek Gottfrid is a Senior Software Architect and Product Technologist at The New York Times. At the Times, he leads the development of TimesPeople, which adds a social layer to NYTimes.com. He also created Times Machine, a collection of digital archives built on Hadoop and Amazon Web Services, and he built the search engine that powers the NYTimes.com Article Search API. Other projects include DBSlayer, a database connection-pooling layer. Derek is a frequent contributor to the Open blog and is fond of four-letter words (including “open” and “code”). 

 

Udi Graff

 

Udi Graff is the Creative Director at LabPixies.com. At LabPixies, the source for the coolest gadgets on the web, Udi leads the user experience and GUI side of the development of gadgets for iGoogle, Yahoo!, Social Networks, iPhone and Android. Prior to LabPixies, Udi was Creative Director at Israeli Samsung Research Center, co-founded Panda Interactive, a pioneer Interactive design studio and taught Interactive Design classes at art colleges in Israel. Udi's favorite colors are pink and apple green.

Eran Hammer-Lahav

 

A frequent contributor to OAuth, OpenID, XRD, WebFinger, and other emerging community-driven technologies, Eran is currently the Director of Standards Development at Yahoo!. Previously, Eran was the founder of Nouncer, a small internet startup building social content distribution technologies, focused on scalability and performance. Eran is currently serving as the President of the Open Web Foundation.

 

Tony Haile

 

Tony Haile is General Manager of two companies within the NYC-based accelerator Betaworks: Chartbeat and Twitterfeed. Chartbeat provides real-time analytics for websites and Twitterfeed is the largest publisher of content to Twitter with more than 300,000 publishers pushing more than half a million feeds to Twitter. Prior to joining Betaworks, Tony headed strategy for chi.mp where he tried (and failed miserably) to build a distributed open social network, and spent a lot of the time in the Arctic trying to get home-made versions of Wordpress to publish through a satellite phone. Tom Hughes-Croucher

 

Tom Hughes-Croucher is an Evangelist and Senior Developer in Yahoo’s Open Strategy Group, focusing on Yahoo’s Web Services and Cloud Platform. Tom has contributed to a number of Web standards for the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the British Standards Institute (BSI). Previously he helped build the online music stores for some of the UK’s largest brands including Tesco, Three Telecom and Channel 4.

 

Alex Iskold

 

Alex Iskold is founder and CEO of NYC startup AdaptiveBlue.  He is also a feature writer for popular technology blog ReadWriteWeb.  Alex frequently speaks at technology events about semantic web, cloud computing and social networking.

 

 

 

Chris Jaffe

 

As Director of Advertising User Experience at Yahoo!, Chris Jaffe founded and leads the next-generation advertising user experience team (AdUX). The AdUX team is charged with researching users’ experience with advertising in video, rich media, mobile, and social media; and leading development of advanced ad products in these spaces. His recent work includes the design of new video ad formats for Yahoo! including the new IAB-standard interactive video ad format, leading the design of the user interface framework for Yahoo!’s APT platform, and driving page design optimization across Yahoo!. He holds a Master’s degree from Cornell University and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona. 

 

Jonathan LeBlanc

 

Jonathan LeBlanc works with the partner integrations group in the Yahoo! Developer Network as a senior software engineer / technology evangelist.  Focusing on partner relationships and training, as well as external developer integrations, Jonathan works with and promotes emerging technologies to aid in the adoption and utilization of new social development techniques.  As a software engineer, Jonathan works extensively with social interaction development on the web, developing new methods for linking social networks to drive the ideal of an open web.

 

Christine Lemke

 

Christine Lemke is a Co-founder and the COO of Sense Networks, a NYC based startup that applies advanced machine learning techniques to mine mobile phone data.  At Sense Networks, she is responsible for overall operations and product development.  Previously, Christine spent time at 3i Group in Europe and Microsoft XBOX in Redmond, WA.  In addition, she was a Co-founder and early investor in Channel Velocity.

 

Xavier Legros

 

Xavier oversees product management for the Yahoo! Application Platform, and most recently launched the ability for developers to create apps on the new Yahoo! homepage. Before joining Yahoo!, Xavier was the Mac OS X Technology evangelist at Apple, where he interfaced with engineering and 3rd party developers to promote a variety of Mac OS X technologies.   Xavier holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from the University of Compiegne.  You can find him writing YAP apps during Hack Day. 

 

Rasmus Lerdorf

 

Rasmus Lerdorf is known for having gotten the PHP project off the ground in 1995 and has contributed to a number of other open source projects over the years. He is currently an engineer at Yahoo! He was born in Greenland, has lived in Denmark, Canada, Brazil, and the US, and has a Systems Design engineering degree from the University of Waterloo in Canada. 

 

Khris Loux

 

Khris has a strong 15-year track record of achievement as a technology entrepreneur and is currently CEO and Co-Founder of JS-Kit, one of the worlds largest distributed social networks.  Prior work includes founding computer security software firm, Securix, Inc. and the Open Systems division of Intelligent Electronics.  He serves on the Boards of JS-Kit and My Name is E and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Khris has a Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in Economics and Finance, from Mount Saint Mary's College in Maryland.

 

Hilary Mason

 

Hilary is a data scientist and computer  science professor with a focus in  machine learning, data mining, and web  applications. She is widely published and  regularly speaks at academic and industry  conferences, and recently realized her dream  of delivering a talk on algorithms while  drinking a dry ice martini. She holds undergraduate degrees from Grinnell College in english and computer science and graduate degrees from Brown University in computer science with a focus on artificial intelligence. She is an  enthusiastic developer and often releases  code on her personal site, www.hilarymason.com. She has discovered two  new species, loves to bake cookies, and asks  way too many questions.

 

Bill Michels

 

Bill is the GM and Sr. Director of Yahoo's Open Search Platform, where he's responsible for the product and business management of BOSS.  He’s been at Yahoo! for over 5 ½ years and previously was the Director for International Operations and Strategy, where he managed the product and strategic initiatives for monetization of Yahoo!’s international search businesses.  Prior to Yahoo!, Bill held business development and strategic planning positions at Vcommerce and ThinkFire, and was an Equity Research Associate at UBS covering the Telecom and Internet sector.  Bill has a MBA from Columbia Business School and BA from Colby College.

 

Marco Neumann

 

Marco Neumann is an Information Scientist and CEO of KONA, an information consulting and semantic technology company based in NYC. KONA provides knowledge organization and network analysis services and technologies for the emerging Semantic Web. He's worked with semantic technologies since 2000 and is currently interested in distributed information syndication, contextual matching, cultural heritage data management, dynamic schema evolution in structured data, reputation based ranking in collaborative online communities, and last but not least the Semantic GeoSpatialWeb. Tony Ng

 

As Sr. Engineering Director of the Open Developer group, Tony Ng is responsible for Yahoo! developer platforms and technologies including Yahoo! Application Platform (YAP), which enables developers to create and distribute applications to popular Yahoo! destinations; Yahoo! Query Language (YQL), an expressive SQL-like language for querying and updating data across the internet; and Yahoo! Developer Network (YDN), the central hub for Yahoo! developer program, documentation, tools and SDKs.  Before joining Yahoo!, Tony was the Director of Engineering at Sun Microsystems, where he managed development of Java EE platform and GlassFish application server. Tony holds a MS in Computer Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MBA from University of California, Berkeley. 

 

Josh Nguyen

 

Josh Nguyen first shared his thoughts online through a blog on his college’s Telnet with awesome blinking text and a tiled background. Since then, he has evolved to oversharing on social networks and graphs and planes and webs and nests. He is currently a product manager at Flickr. 

 

 

Charlie O'Donnell

 

Charlie is the Co-Founder & CEO of Path 101, a NYC startup that is revolutionizing career guidance though the mining of data from millions of public resumes. After funding VCs at the GM pension fund, and funding startups at Union Square Ventures, Charlie spent a year as Director of Consumer Products at Oddcast before starting Path 101 with Alex Lines. The founder of nextNY , he also teaches entrepreneurship at Fordham University and is the Entrepreneur-in-Residence at ITAC .

 

Sam Pullara

 

Sam Pullara is vice president and chief technologist at Yahoo!. While at Yahoo!, Pullara has led the Yahoo! Application Platform, played key roles in business and technology strategy, including business development and M&A, and also contributed to a variety of tech technology programs and initiatives, including work on grid computing (e.g., Hadoop), virtualization and large scale reliable data systems.  Before Yahoo!, Pullara founded Gauntlet Systems while an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Accel Venture Partners . Pullara is a board member of the OpenSocial Foundation, founded by Yahoo!, Google and MySpace. He also contributes to open source projects and volunteers his time to the Java Community Process through participation in several expert groups. Pullara has a M.S. in Physics from Northwestern University and a B.S. in Physics from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).

As Vice President of Business Development, Patrick is responsible for growing and managing publisher partnerships.  Before joining Gigya, Patrick co-founded a suite of social network applications and served as Associate Consultant for L.E.K. Consulting, a strategy consulting firm.  Patrick holds a bachelors degree from Harvard University.

 

Russ Schafer

 

Russ Schafer is the Senior Director of Product Marketing for Yahoo! Connected TV. Russ has global product marketing responsibility including consumer insights, segmentation, concept development, branding, pricing, positioning and compelling “out of the box” consumer experiences. Prior to joining Yahoo!, Russ held positions as Director of Marketing, Director of Technology Management, Director of Business Development and Operations, and Regional Sales Manager for Intel, Sybase, and IBM. He has marketed a broad range of hardware, software, and Internet products and services to consumers and businesses. His responsibilities spanned the entire product lifecycle, including research, design, development, branding, pricing, manufacturing, inventory management, distribution and intellectual property. Russ holds an MBA in international business from Duke University and a BBA in Management from Texas A&M University. 

 

Isaac Zimmitti Schlueter

 

 Isaac Schlueter has been creating web pages since the 90s.  He has worked on an assortment of Yahoo projects, from Games to Buzz to YAP, and is now a member of the YUI team.  He lives in Silicon Valley with 2 cats, and relishes the opportunity to write about himself in the third person.

 

 

Cody Simms

 

Cody Simms joined Yahoo! in 2005 and is currently Senior Director of Product Management for the Yahoo! Open Strategy, which includes all of Yahoo!’s user generated content platforms, social platforms, and open application platform efforts.  Before Yahoo!, Cody held product management positions at The New York Times, Sprint PCS, and NBC Internet. He holds an MA in transnational communications and global media from Goldsmiths College, University of London, and is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Kansas with a BA in Chinese and history. Outside of Yahoo!, Cody is a lecturer for the Annenberg Program on Online Communities at the University of Southern California.

 

Vik Singh

 

Vik Singh helped create and design Yahoo! BOSS, a popular open search platform. He has developed several real-time BOSS based examples like TweetNews and the Fresh homepage for Delicious. This year, MIT's Technology Review listed him as one of the Top 35 under 35 Innovators for his contributions to search. Previously, Vik worked at Google and Microsoft, both in research and products, helping ship Google Custom Search and Windows XPSP2 Wireless Networking. At Microsoft Research, he worked under Turing Award Winner Dr. Jim Gray, co-authoring a publication together on data mining the SkyServer logs. He has filed 9 patents in the areas of search, social networking, and web services.

 

Joseph Smarr

 

Joseph Smarr is Chief Technology Offer at Plaxo. He is currently leading Plaxo’s “Open Social Web” initiative to put users back in control of who they know when using socially-enabled sites by using open data-sharing standards. An active participant in the Web 2.0 community, Joseph has built web applications for many years, including Plaxo’s online address book, web widgets, and was architect and lead developer of the Plaxo 3.0 rich AJAX address book, calendar, and sync tool. Joseph has a BS and MS from Stanford University in Artificial Intelligence. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of both the OpenID Foundation and the OpenSocial Foundation.

 

Paul Tarjan

 

Paul is a senior software engineer working in the NextGen group at Yahoo! Search. He is a founding member of SearchMonkey and is currently responsible for leading exciting "NextGen" search projects. A true nerd, Paul is interested in everything from building a search engine from scratch to optimizing the cache behavior of a loop to understanding why there are so many independent fundamental constants to proving that 1+1=2 using set theory. He is currently focused on projects enabling external developers and publishers to enhance the Yahoo! search experience. A hacker at heart, Paul is very involved in HackU and is always building a new hack in his spare time.

 

Mike Tadlock

 

Mike Tadlock is a Director of Product Management for Yahoo!’s Open and Social (Y!OS) efforts. He leads a talented team of Product Managers focused on platforms that deliver identity, relationship, and syndication solutions to the nearly half a billion users that visit Yahoo! each month. Prior to his seven years at Yahoo!, Mike worked for E*TRADE, 1stUp.com (a CMGI company), and Merado Software (acquired by Earthlink). 

 

Dan Theurer

 

Dan Theurer works in the Yahoo! Developer Network where he leads the Partner Integration and Technical Evangelism team. Dan works with partners that want to integrate with Yahoo! Services; speaks and writes on various technology topics; manages Yahoo's internal hack program, and drives innovation within the company. Having been with the Developer Network since the beginning, he took the program from one service to it's current state, built Yahoo!'s web service authentication before there was OAuth, and was a key contributor to the company's OpenID effort. Prior to Yahoo!, Dan worked for eBay's Developers Program on open source software and platform evangelism. Born and raised in Germany, he holds a Masters Degree in Computer Science from the Esslingen University of Applied Sciences, and currently resides in San Jose, CA with his wife and son. 

 

Allen Tom

 

Allen Tom is principal architect for Yahoo!'s Membership Platform, and is responsible for Yahoo!'s Single Sign On and auth services, including OpenID, OAuth, BBAuth, and SAML. Allen has been working on security and identity at Yahoo for more than four years, and is a huge proponent for open standards. Allen is a big fan of OpenID, and is an OpenID Foundation community board member, serving on the specifications, user interface, and security committees  Prior to joining Yahoo!, Allen was principal engineer at AOL and Netscape, working on LDAP, online shopping, and streaming media. Allen has a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley. In his spare time Allen takes pictures of smiling dogs and rides bicycles really slowly.

 

Jonathan Trevor

 

Jonathan Trevor works in the Consumer Platform group at Yahoo!, where he gets to improve, innovate, and create various Yahoo! applications and services like YQL, Pipes and the application platform. Prior to Yahoo! he was a senior research scientist at FX Palo Alto Laboratory, where he worked on mobile and ubiquitous systems, computer-supported cooperative work and human computer interaction. He received a PhD in computer science from the University of Lancaster, UK in 1995.

 

Albert Wenger

 

Albert Wenger combines over 10 years of entrepreneurial experience with an in-depth technology background. As an entrepreneur, he has founded or co-founded five companies, including a management consulting firm (in Germany), a hosted data analytics company, a technology subsidiary for Telebanc (now E*Tradebank), an early stage investment firm, and most recently (with his wife), DailyLit, a service for reading books by email or RSS. Albert also served as the president of del.icio.us through the company’s sale to Yahoo. His technology background goes back to winning the German national computer science competition at age 18. Albert graduated summa cum laude from Harvard College in economics and computer science and holds a Ph.D. in Information Technology from MIT. He has managed technology projects for organizations as diverse as Tacoda (startup) and Telebanc (leading Internet bank).  Albert currently serves on the boards of 10gen, AMEE, Clickable, Covestor, Foursquare and Heyzap, and is a board observer at Etsy. Albert is married with three kids and lives in Scarsdale, New York.

Dustin Whittle is a Developer Evangelist for Yahoo's Open Strategy. When he is not advocating Yahoo's Open Stack, he helps develop it through his work on the Yahoo! Developer Network and Yahoo! Application Platform. Prior to his work helping create an open Yahoo!, he has contributed to Yahoo! Answers and Delicious. When not focused on Yahoo!, he is an active open source contributor for the symfony project and is a regular speaker at technical conferences around the world.
